When you intend to buy a leather item, one question may come into your mind – how can I distinguish the real leather from imitation leather?

Someone may simply tell you to buy a piece of expensive brand product because they never tell lies on product material. However, do you think it’s possible for you to afford that? What I want to say here is something that easier and more practical.

There are 4 steps for you to judge that whether an item is made by real leather or imitation leather. Here that cowhide for illustration.

1. LOOK

Look at your own skin, you will find that there are pores, texture and gloss. So does the real leather. Look carefully at the belt and you will find pores, texture and gloss on it. Though it is one piece of belt, you will find that the texture varies on different parts.

Also, real leather enjoys great ductibility. When you fold the belt, the texture become less obvious; at the same time, you can see the pores more clearly.

2. TOUCH

This may be a hard step for you to follow because it is hard to tell you that how I feel when I touch a piece of product. A common rule is that real leather touches good and smooth while imitation leather does not

3. PINCH

All kinds of real leather enjoy elasticity. When you pinch the real leather, you will find that it forms some unusual textures.

Note: for hard cowhide, due to the special craft, there is usually no texture on it and it is hard to pinch it, but you can still see pores on it.

4. SMELL

Usually, imitation leather shares penetrating odor that is quite similar to that of plastic. You can find some real leather item, smell it and you will know it.

Let’s see some imitation leather illustration.

1. It seems that there are texture and pores on this piece of leather. However, when you pinch it, no new texture forms.

2. No new texture forms when pinch it. No pores neither.

3. The texture on this leather is too regular to look real.
